What is Somatic Experiencing?


Somatic Experiencing is a body-based therapeutic approach that aims to resolve symptoms of acute stress and trauma that accumulate in our bodies and result in nervous system dysregulation.

It works by inviting clients to gently explore their physical sensations and reconnect with their bodies in a safe and controlled way. The intention is to help the nervous system complete its natural processing of self- protective motor responses and the release of thwarted survival energy bound in the body as a result of overwhelming experiences.

This includes slowly guiding clients to develop increasing tolerance for difficult bodily sensations and suppressed emotions by working at the level of the nervous system and using tools such as body awareness (interoception and proprioception), pendulation, titration, and resourcing.

Overall, the intention of Somatic Experiencing is to restore a felt-sense of balance and resilience that supports the nervous system in moving beyond the lingering effects of acute stress or trauma and into the present moment.
